Challenging fishing for Tullamore anglers on Grand Canal

February 6th, 2018 | by

Pat Foran reports on the latest news from Tullamore and District Angling Club who fished a competition in the Midlands at the weekend…

Tullamore and District Angling Club held a Pike angling competition on Sunday 4th February.

Conditions were very challenging for the 10 anglers who turned out to fish the event on the Grand Canal.

The competition started at 10 am and continued until 16.00. We all expected the fishing to be slow as there was a thin layer of ice stretching along the surface of the canal.

By midday, the sun had come out and a slight breeze came which created a narrow feeding opportunity which resulted in a few small pike been caught.

By 13.00 the slight breeze was long gone and anglers were struggling with the clear bright conditions and ice cold water. Many anglers choose to fish static dead baits on the bottom which overall resulted in a major majority of the fish caught over the day. The winning method on the day which captured the heaviest fish was by using a roach dead bait and fishing using the sink and draw method.

This resulted in a lovely fish of 8lb 1oz and a few smaller fish also. Although fishing was poor everyone who fished enjoyed a good day and is looking forward to our next pike competition.

Our next Pike angling competition will be in memory of Jim Hogan who was a very well respected man in the club over the years and was well known as a very talented angler. In Jim’s memory we annually compete for the Jim Hogan Cup which is our biggest Pike event of the year and is an “Open event” so if you are free on the day, we would welcome you to come along.

Results were:

7 Pike caught overall.

1st Pat Foran – 1 Pike (8lb 1oz)

2nd Eugene Cahill -2 Pike (7lb 4oz)

3rd Johnny Molyneaux – 1 Pike (6lb 7oz)

The Junior Prize on the day was won by young John James Mulligan.
