In May 2017, ten BCA members went sailing on Tiare, a 55 foot catamaran, in the Seto Inland Sea. This was BCA’s first Japan Rendezvous, an overwhelming successful event arranged by BCA member Kirk Patterson who sailed single-handed from BC to Japan in Silk Purse and now resides in Japan.

Lynn Zeidler and Stephen Dorsay were two of those participants keen to see Japan as a sailing destination. Little did they know that their host would not only set up a tremendous sailing opportunity, but would also provide us with insights into Japan’s history, culture, cuisine and economics. Sailing in the Seto Inland Sea is similar to the Gulf/San Juan Islands – albeit with much heavier commercial ship traffic – but going ashore was an entirely new experience, with outstanding cuisine and many opportunities to engage with the local community.

Be prepared: Lynn and Stephen’s presentation may whet your appetite to sign up for the second BCA Japan Rendezvous, tentatively planned for spring 2019.
