Back on Donegal Bay

22 January: Storm Fionn was a blessing in disguise as the fleet tied to the pier gave a rare off day in January with a weather window to try for some Bass yesterday. Heading across the bay to get the wind at our backs fishing was slow on the flattie count as mostly small Turbots and flounders around 20cm took the baits as the bigger fish have mostly moved out to spawn now.

But as darkness fell that was the trigger for the “round” fish to come in under the cover and feed and that’s when things got very busy. A shoal of bass with Johnny and Jason both hooking up at the same time making a hectic few seconds to get a few scale samples before releasing the fish back quickly as possible with the lads happy for their first bass of 2018 at the first attempt.

Then good size coley hit hard coming 2 and 3 at a time all averaging around 30cm which would be lovely in a competition but quickly emptied the bait boxes on a grand night out.

Good to be back
