How to Tie the Most Lifelike Streamers Ever

The Tricky Worm is such a lame toy that my 2-year-old isn’t mildly excited when I hand her one. It’s nothing but a 7-inch piece of soft fluorescent chenille tapered at each end to resemble a chubby, snakelike creature, complete with googly eyes. What you’re supposed to do is work the piece of monofilament tied to its nose like a puppet string, making the Tricky Worm magically slither between your fingers and twirl around pencils. I could never make one do any of that. If, however, you decapitate a Tricky Worm and lash its lifeless body to a hook, its real magic is unlocked. So potent is a streamer with a Tricky Worm tail, I might go as far as calling it the Senko of flyfishing. And I’m certainly not the only one who believes this glorified cat toy may revolutionize the stripping game. It has been somewhat of a guarded secret for years, but you won’t have to track down Tricky Worms in dollar stores much longer. They’ll be crawling into a fly shop near you.

Humble Beginnings

I can’t take one iota of credit for finding Tricky Worms. In June 2015, Colton Ruidl, a fan of my web show, sent me photos of some Tricky Worm patterns he’d tied, dubbing them “Ruidl’s Wiggler.” I was intrigued and hunted down my own stash that same week. The first streamer I made had a purple tail, some dumbbell eyes, and a black Laser Dub head. When I swam it, my jaw hit the riverbank. Never before had I seen such a fluid, sexy shimmy in a fly’s tail. Even when paused, the back end undulated and fluttered. It was alive. I knew immediately that by tweaking colors, length, and weight, I could make this fly become whatever I wanted, from a baitfish to a bass worm to an eel and beyond. In the two years since then, I’ve wrecked everything from Saskatchewan pike to Jersey smallies and stripers to Amazon peacocks on variations of the fly. While I was doing that, Florida guide David Mangum was wrecking something even more massive.

Mangum discovered the worms in a craft store in 2015. They were called Squirmles, which he says is the name brand for the original version of the toy. After some vise work and coloring with a marker, he hit the tarpon grounds. The flies were so lethal on finicky silver kings that in those early days, to keep them out of public view, Mangum would never have them tied on at the ramp.

“These tails are some of the best things I’ve ever put on my line for tarpon,” he says. “We’ve caught fish to 185 pounds with them. Considering their length, they’re highly castable. A long piece of rabbit strip is much harder to throw. I think this material could replace rabbit strip altogether.”

Strength Training

If there’s one drawback to these worms, it’s durability. Tricky Worm and Squirmle branded tails held up decently; the knockoffs I bought in bulk directly from China practically melted upon contact with water. Mangum has struggled with durability issues, too, which is why I was excited to learn that he recently teamed up with Orvis to create a tougher tail. On the market as Mangum’s Dragon Tails ($7 per pack; orvis.com), this 2.0 version is available in two sizes and useful colors like black, white, olive, brown, and pink instead of mainly kid-friendly fluorescents. Still, despite the shored-up construction, these won’t create a “100-fish fly,” as Mangum puts it.

“To get the longest life out of these tails, you have to fuse them,” he says. “When you finish a tie, hold the tail out and hit the end with a lighter just for a second. Then pinch the tip and roll it toward you to create a sharp point.”

Questions about durability shouldn’t scare you; no streamer lasts forever anyway. Whether you tie a Dragon Tail pattern with a weighted head for jigging action or a weightless version to create a suspending swimmer, I promise it’ll be a lightning-bolt moment when you see it move for the first time. And when the wisest old brown in the river, smartest snook under the bridge lights, or most lockjawed largemouth in the pond eats one of these flies, it’s going to have a lightning-bolt moment, too, wondering how the hell it just got duped.

Las bellas Perlas

Las bellas Perlas

by World Cruising Club 10 Feb 05:04 UTC

World ARC 2018-19 – Panama – LasPerlas Anchorage © World Cruising

Yesterday afternoon the World ARC fleet attended the skippers briefing at the Yellow shirt villa which was followed by sun-downer drinks at a poolside bar with spectacular views of the anchorage as the sun sank into the sea. Relaxation and positive vibes was the feeling throughout the fleet as the smell of the BBQ dinner just below slowly brought them down the steps and onto the beach. There a buffet of barbecued prawns, chicken and meat accompanied by some “requetón” music kept the party atmosphere going.

The prize giving took place at the end of the meal and numerous prizes were awarded. The third, second and first place of the mono-hull division were Cayuse (Outremer 51), Libeccio (Leopard 44) and Smoke and Roses (Leopard 47).

The third, second and first place of the cruising division B was as follows; Amara (Hylas 54), Footloose (Cabo Rico 45) and Bijou (Sweden Yachts 42). Cruising division A was won by Alora (Hylas 56) followed by Adrienne (Gibsea 51) and Lunatix (X-Yachts Xp50) in third place.

A few fun prizes were also given out, S/Y Shepherd Moon won both the ETA fun competition guessing only 30 seconds out of their estimated time and also won the quiz question being on 19 years out of the total age of the participants taking part in Leg 2. A friendship prize was awarded to both Madrigal and Solitude for helping and staying in Santa Marta marina with S/Y Someday who had some problems on the start day.

Finally a prize for being at the right place at the right time was given to Shepherd Moon as they saved a local fisherman who was sinking in his canoe as they entered Portobello.

The start took place today at 1100 and was a spectacle, not all the fleet was out on the start line but quite a few colour sails were seen as boats crossed the start line. A 4-5 day passage awaits the fleet as they make their way to the Galapagos islands where the Yellow shirt team will be waiting for them.

It was to be my first ocean crossing, and I wanted to prepare myself – and my boat – as best I could. Books, novels, magazines, forums… I devoured anything I could get my hands on. And yet, of course, this theoretical preparation for a long passage could never truly get me ready for the real thing, and there is no substitute for genuine experience. But there are a few things that seemed to have been overlooked in a lot of the literature, and which I wished we had known about before we weighed anchor in the Cape Verdes and set a course to the west.

I’m going to tell you a little secret: crossing the Atlantic can be really boring. I suppose that boredom doesn’t sell books, whereas drama and excitement do. And whilst we had our share of both of those, when the trade winds have set in and your boat needs little-to-no attention, understanding what really entertains you is vital to making your crossing fun. It may be books, films , sewing, TED talks, playing guitar… Whatever it is that keeps your mind busy, you can never underestimate how important these ‘other’ activities are going to be. I did a hell of a lot of baking in the 15 days that it took us to cross, kept the crew well fed with breads and cakes and fantasized about writing a cookbook. Henrique listened to music, wrote songs, and read all the manuals for our electronics in a effort to get them to behave. Jeremie played his ukulele, did push ups and worked his way through the boat library. And Charlie sewed for 2000 miles, making new covers for our outboard and generator, and lots of beautiful handmade gifts to distribute on his travels. So whatever floats your boat, make sure that you’ve got plenty of it on board!

That said, whatever you bring, pretty much as soon as you set off you won’t want it anymore. Avid booklover? On day 3, you’d kill for a trashy movie. Love films? You’re going to have a sudden desire to learn to play that trumpet that’s been in the back of your garage for ten years. We put this feeling down to a perfect normal reaction to going from life in a society where we could so easily obtain pretty much whatever we wanted 24/7, to the simple, uncluttered life of the oceans. This strange, unsettled feeling quickly passed as we got to the routine of being on board; the book-lovers went back to their novels, and the film buffs worked their way through DVDs each evening.

The same feeling applied to food; I was responsible for all the shopping and wouldn’t let anyone else set foot in my galley. And yet as soon as we set out, I started craving all sorts of things that we didn’t have, and that we didn’t even usually eat, simply because there was no way I could have them.

Another thing not to be overlooked is that you will be constantly hungry. I could eat a huge meal and be ready to eat again half an hour into my afternoon watch. In our life on land, we were not big on snacking between meals, and so nibbles were not something that I had factored into our shopping. Luckily, our mums had, and they provided us with gifts of dried fruit, almonds, biscuits and jam before we set off. Happily, the bilges were therefore packed full of these kind of snacks, and as we near the Caribbean I can assure you that the supplies are running low. Call it the movement of the boat, the sea air, or whatever you like, but we are eating five times a day and if anything we are getting thinner.

The next things for which I wish I had been better prepared is the noise. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve sailed a lot on Contigo; she is a solid 1994 Fountaine Pajot and as such she make very little noise, unlike some more modern catamarans who reportedly creak and squeal their way through crossings. But Henrique and I sleep in the aft cabin, the two forward ones being occupied by our crew, and in a following sea the sound of the water knocking, sloshing and banging against the hull for fifteen days is only just short of deafening. And in calm conditions, we were unsettled by the creepy sound of Sargasso weeds dragging along the hull in the middle of the night; I rather thought that they sounded like witches’ fingers! Our happy crew heard none of these sounds in their cabins, and slept much more soundly than we could. So if you are a light sleeper, make sure that you choose your cabin well, otherwise you might be in for two weeks of bags under your eyes…

Lastly, I don’t think that any of the books or articles that I read really managed to convey the cocktail of absolute wonder and sheer fear that you can experience at times when in the middle of the ocean. This is the feeling that you get when the night sky is lit up with stunning firecrackers of lightning as you rush to put your electronics in the oven and pray that the storm doesn’t find your little mast. I also felt it when the back of a huge blue whale suddenly arched up out of the water some 35m off starboard, only to be followed by its baby breaching clumsily as if to get a better look at us. And the feeling was there when our 25 year old spinnaker suddenly split into three in heavy rain, but the whole crew appeared on deck and worked together to haul the bits back in and tidy up, soaked to the skin but still laughing.

We are about 200 miles off Martinique as I write this so I don’t want to jinx things by calling our crossing a success just yet, but we have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves so far, and hope that our little titbits of advice might be useful to you if you are preparing an ocean passage. And at the very least, hopefully they have made you smile!

Cruising Japan’s Inland Sea: BCA Japan Rendezvous

VI South Club Night – Cruising Japan’s Inland Sea: BCA Japan Rendezvous

by Bluewater Cruising Association 9 Feb 20:33 UTC

Cruising Japan’s Inland Sea: BCA Japan Rendezvous © Bluewater Cruising Association

In May 2017, ten BCA members went sailing on Tiare, a 55 foot catamaran, in the Seto Inland Sea. This was BCA’s first Japan Rendezvous, an overwhelming successful event arranged by BCA member Kirk Patterson who sailed single-handed from BC to Japan in Silk Purse and now resides in Japan.

Lynn Zeidler and Stephen Dorsay were two of those participants keen to see Japan as a sailing destination. Little did they know that their host would not only set up a tremendous sailing opportunity, but would also provide us with insights into Japan’s history, culture, cuisine and economics. Sailing in the Seto Inland Sea is similar to the Gulf/San Juan Islands – albeit with much heavier commercial ship traffic – but going ashore was an entirely new experience, with outstanding cuisine and many opportunities to engage with the local community.

Be prepared: Lynn and Stephen’s presentation may whet your appetite to sign up for the second BCA Japan Rendezvous, tentatively planned for spring 2019.

Pacific Angler Friday Fishing Report: February 9, 2018

OUTLOOK

We are going to throw something different at you in this edition of the report. As always we will look at all the popular fisheries but this week we are toying with a new fishery. It is an interesting one that ties into the lifeblood of our local oceans. We are going to look at sports fishing for herring. This is a fishery that is in it prime right now and though we are not experts in it, we have taken some interest and there is a ton of room for innovation as the fishery is relatively untapped. During this time of year good numbers of herring can be found close to shore and Dustin has a full write up below on how you could get out for some unconventional but still fun fishing close to home. Don’t miss it in the saltwater report section below.

Matt is out on the Squamish this weekend and though we are in a time when this fishery begins to change from egging to a swung fly fishery there are still great egging reports coming in. Also if you are a gear guy or Spey angler it might be time to start thinking about steelhead. Jordan has some observations and tips if you are heading out this week.

The Vedder has been high again this week and Alex has more info on that in the river report section as well.

Lastly Jason was out last week and so were a number of our guides. Lars and Dustin got into a bunch of undersized fish but Jason and a couple of our other boats managed good-sized keepers on their trips. We’re out on the water all weekend so will have the latest reports for you over the weekend as well.

CLASSES AND COURSES

While Matt’s Tying Essential Bulltrout Patterns class is sold out there are still a couple of spots in his Introduction to Fly Tying Course and his Introduction to Spey Casting Course.   Call the shop today and get dialled in for upcoming season.

If you’re already looking ahead to March two of Andre’s most popular tying classes are coming up.   Get your spot before these classes sell out.   All the information is below.

Tying Essential Bulltrout Patterns – SOLD OUT – Call the shop to be added to the waitlist
Bulltrout / dollies… let’s just call them char are an interesting species. These fish have a diverse habitat, a very interesting life cycle and within the species they have very different characteristics in both size, color and feeding habits depending on their environment. The feeding habits are what we look at in this course.  This is a fishing course within a tying course. Instructor, Matt Sharp has caught bulltrout from here to Alaska will share with you an overview of his guide theories on fly selection for char in their different habitats. He will then teach you to tie three of his guide favourites. His sculpin pattern, the Cherokee intruder and then his go to intruder that has a name that is not fit for print.

This seminar is well suited to tiers who have taken our beginner course and have basic tying skills. Advanced tiers will find the first two patterns fairly easy but they can challenge themselves with variations of the last pattern. If you are an experienced tier you probably already know that sometimes the skill, effectiveness and beauty of many great guide flies comes from their simplicity. Students are required to supply their own vise, tools and materials. A 10% discount is available on materials and tools purchased for the course.

Date: Feb 20
Time: 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Cost: $45.00+GST

 Introduction To Fly Fishing
This course was specifically designed to give the new fly fisher the basic knowledge, casting skills and fly fishing strategies to effectively fish our local BC waters. This course is comprised of two sessions; 3hr evening seminar and a 3hr casting session.   The dates below show the seminar date first and casting date second.
Dates: Seminar Feb 21 & Casting Feb 24
Seminar Time: 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Casting Time(s): 10am – 1pm or 2pm -5pm

Introduction To Spey Casting
This 2-part course is designed to introduce you to the art of Spey fishing and establish the fundamental techniques required for basic Spey casts used on our local rivers.

Dates: Seminar: Feb 28      Casting: Mar 3 (Squamish)
Seminar Time: 6:30pm – 9:30pm
Cost: $150.00+GST

Tying Epoxy Fry Patterns
Epoxy fly patterns were developed here on the west coast to capitalize on the large fry emergence every spring. Pacific Angler will help you unlock the secrets to applying epoxy, which can be a very tricky material to work with. During the course your instructor will teach you how to imitate the different salmon fry species, the different methods to shaping bodies, adding eyes, and other important techniques. Course is suitable for intermediate/advanced tiers. Students are required to supply their own vise, tools and materials. A 10% discount is available on materials and tools purchased for the course.

Date: Mar 6
Time: 6:30pm – 9:30pm

Tying Chironomid Patterns
80% of a trout’s diet consists of chironomids whose patterns vary from lake to lake. This 3-hour evening seminar will teach you how to tie a variety of the most effective chironomid patterns used in BC’s world-renowned lakes.   You will finish this course understanding the very specific technical aspects ranging from beads, ribbing, colors, and body shapes. Students are required to supply their own vise, tools and materials. A 10% discount is available on materials and tools purchased for the course.

Date: Mar 12
Time: 6:30pm – 9:30pm

FRESHWATER FISHING REPORTS

Capilano River Fishing Report
The reports from the Capilano have been spotty but the hatchery has managed an ok number of brood stock fish. This could mean there are more fish in the river or the brood guys have been bringing their “A” game. For the next 2 months this is a fishery well worth looking at if you are float fishing and only have a limited amount of time. The key is watching the water levels, matching your presentation to those levels and bringing good polarized glasses. Spotting fish on the river is quite common. It is common to see the experienced anglers just watching holding lies. It is definitely a fun way to fish.

Come down to the shop and we can walk you through what you need and look at the water levels with you to pick the right gear for the given day.

Matt Sharp

Chilliwack River Fishing Report
For a second week in a row we have been combating high water conditions including a tremendous blowout. The high and dirty water has been a limiting factor in access to fishy spots but despite this we have been seeing some good fish being pulled out. The forecast is calling for less precipitation this coming week and lower temperatures so we will hopefully see some nicer water emerging as the levels drop. Regardless, the fish are in the system so get out there in the next few days.

For those that may not be aware there are a couple of good references for water conditions on the Chilliwack.

For water levels, go to https://wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/ and click on “real-time hydrometric data”. Go to “station search” and then search “Chilliwack”. The reading from the Vedder Crossing is the one that the majority of anglers use.

For a good idea of what the water clarity is like, check out the following link and scroll down to the camera that is on the Vedder Crossing Bridge: http://www.chilliwack.ca/main/page.cfm?id=1528

Best of luck out there and go get some chrome!

Alex Au-Yeung

Squamish River Fishing Report
With this past week’s weather being a bit sporadic, water levels and the fishing were the same. We saw the water spike, drop, plateau, drop, spike, and drop. Though this can make fishing tough for some depending on which days you were able to get out, it also made it quite good for others who happened to luck out and fish the right days.

We saw sculpins and beads playing the usual suspects, with even 10mm beads working for some on those days with dirtier water. Naturally, we are in the stage of eggs that considered “washed-dead,” and our beads or glo-bugs should match. This means pale/light pink with no transparency, to almost an off-white/grey.

When the water has bumped a bit, it also doesn’t hurt to cover lots of water and explore as fish get cycled and flushed between runs.

Swinging steelhead flies may also be of some interest to a few anglers as it is February and they usually start to poke their nose into the Squamish and it’s tributaries around this time.

Anglers who are drift fishing may want to follow the same advice with beads, as well as start drifting colorado blades, pink worms, gooey bobs, and jigs to try and fool an early steelhead as well.

Cheers,

Jordan Simpson

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report
Fishing was pretty solid this past week with good reports from a variety of locations. We didn’t make it over to the Gulf Islands, but some of our friends did and had some good fishing, which is pretty standard for this time of year. Our boats stayed a little closer to home and we had some good fishing in Howe Sound as well as decent prawning and crabbing.

Fishing_In_Vancouver

Natalie with a decent winter chinook taken just off the bottom with a 3.0 Herring Aide spoon.

We are pretty much in the middle of winter chinook season and that means you can expect good amounts of bait and fish on most days. If the wind and weather are decent, its time get out there. Sometimes the fish are small and sometimes they are big, you just have to put your time in and you will be rewarded.

You have to keep on your toes this time of year and treat every bite with respect.   Sometimes it is a little guy that you need to release safely and quickly, sometimes it’s a slab!

What do Pacific Angler Booking Manager Lars and Sales Associate Dustin do on their days off? Why they go fishing of course. Our staff truly live to fish and fish to live.

Salmon_Fishing_Vancouver

Lars and Dustin out in Chasin’ Tales on their day off, exploring Howe Sound and chasing winter chinook.

As mentioned earlier, prawning has been decent. If you like prawns it is well worth dropping the traps right now.

Herring Fishery Report
This time of the year herring fishing can be done in our local waters. They are great eating fish, and great bait to stock up on.  Herring can be found pretty much anywhere as they are schooling fish that move around estuaries, bays and coves. The known hot spots to find these fish are Steveston pier, No. 3 Rd. Pier and Ambleside pier. To target these fish you need a rod that is heavy enough to cast weights around 1/2 oz to 1 1/2 oz and it should be able to hold multiple herring because you might be lucky sometimes. I personally like to use my salmon spinning setup with 3/4 oz bell weight with sabiki rigs. You can also use a heavier bouncing betty if you want more distance. You should slowly retrieve your rig and jerk it for a weak jigging motion. On Steveston pier you can also take your light fly gear with a heavy sinktip and strip some of the smaller flies when it’s not too windy.

When looking for these fish, you should look for signs. Seagulls, dimples and nervous water can indicate signs of herring.

Aim for slack tide as the fish will be the most aggressive and look for kelp beds as most likely they will be sitting there. When in doubt, cast and try a few times as you could be rewarded.

This is an another fishery that you could try when all the rivers are blown and you want to go out fishing, please respect others on the pier give each other enough space and watch out for the crabbing lines.

Have fun and stop by the shop if you want to get set up for herring fishing.

What’s New in Sailboat Deck Gear

When upgrading your boat’s deck hardware, make sure the replacement has a working load at least as high as the old gear and that the sheave size will fit your intended line.

The low-profile base can be installed just about anywhere on the deck. Gear such as strops, blocks or low-friction rings can easily be attached and switched out for different conditions or sail configurations. The toggle locks into the base, and cannot be removed under load.

The cheek plate rotates for immediate line placement, and an adjustable screw can set it in a fully locked position.

The company designed the Element from the ground up to keep it within a price point for budget-conscious sailors. The result is a contemporary block that is extraordinarily durable, efficient — and wallet-friendly.

Ronstan Core blocks use a full-contact acetyl bearing on a polished stainless-steel race, which ensures low friction even under heavy loads.

With the Series 200 and 280, Ronstan has extended its range of continuous-line furlers for use on boats up to 82 feet. These furlers are ideal for handling asymmetric spinnakers, gennakers and code zeros.

The unit is available as a complete kit or as an upgrade kit for several existing Furlex models, and you can choose either an on-deck or through-deck installation.

When installed, the mainsail will rise easily and drop the instant the halyard is released.

Top Bass Boat Accessories You Can’t Miss!

Having  a boat is a lot of fun so be sure to trick it out with all great bass boat accessories you can afford.  Here are some ideas.

Best Bass Boat Accessories

Electronics

Sure, you can work off a compass and a chart, but how cool are split screen chart plotters that double as navigation units and depth finders?  At a recent boat show, I saw a new model that shows bottom terrain in 3-D. My neighbor said it sounded silly, but that bass fishing boat accessories  show slots that will hold fish; and I don’t need to go scuba diving to see ’em.

LED Trailer Lights

Among the newest bass fishing boat accessories are waterproof lights that mount to your trailer frame. Launching before dawn is much easier but the real benefit is hauling when it’s dark.  Your trailer lights up like an airport runway at night!  They’re cool for experts as well as for folks learning how to boat.  And if you’re fishing a lot during  pre-dawn or post sunset hours then look at a light bar for your console. These bass boat accessories  are perfect for easier rigging in the morning and faster clean up after you haul.

Battery Charging Systems

These days it seems as if everyone needs more juice, and a battery charging system makes life easy.  One of the best bass fishing boat accessories, these units send a charge to turn over a dead battery just as easily as they’ll recharge smart phones and Go Pros.  Safety first, fish pictures and video second.

Bass Boat Supplies

You’ve probably got all the usual bass boat accessories ranging from marine radios, bowlines, fenders and both safety and first aid kids.  Do yourself a favor and swap out the standard bass tracker boat accessories for aftermarket gear.  Custom seats, boat covers, jackplates, and trolling motors protect your investment while improving performance.

Bass boat accessories should be practical, solutions-oriented gear.  And when it comes to boat accessories fpr bass fishing they should be fun and help you catch more fish.  Get some today, check where to go fish and boat and find the best boat supplies shop near you. The season is right around the corner.

Our Family Fishing and Boating Adventure in Idaho

Buried deep in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho is one of the state’s best hidden gems, the town of Stanley. This tiny mountain community is home to only about 60 full-time residents, but during the spring, summer and fall, it attracts throngs of visitors with some of the best water sports around. River rafting, boating, water skiing, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, canoeing and especially fishing—Stanley has it all for water lovers!

Camping was on our summer bucket list this year. Confession: our kids have never been camping! When we heard about Stanley, we knew this would be the perfect place for us. It offers everything we love: mountains, nature, hiking, rivers, lakes and fishing!

Stanley is home to incredible fishing, offering rainbow trout, west slope cutthroat, brook, bull trout, mountain whitefish, and chinook salmon in its waters. The Salmon River is the location of the longest salmon run in North America, over 900 miles, and fishermen flock here in the spring! Now you know why it’s called the Salmon River!

We spent several days camping in Stanley, right on the lake. We had a chance to go rafting down the Salmon River, kayaking and fishing the mirror-like waters of Stanley Lake, plus fly fishing in the Salmon River. We used Take Me Fishing’s “Where to Fish and Boat” interactive map to locate the best places to fish in Stanley, plus a fly fishing shop and a fishing guide.

We’ve always been firm believers in experiences over things. Since we were camping during Paul’s birthday, and because he always wanted to learn to fly fish, we found a guide to take him out and give him a lesson.

I’ll let Paul tell you about his fly fishing experience:

The fly fishing guide, Troy with Sawtooth Adventure Co., was highly knowledgeable—not only about fly fishing techniques and locations, but also about local fish species. We drift-boated down the Salmon River, and I enjoyed learning about the local history of Stanley, fish identification, insect lifecycles and how they impact fish feeding habits and so much more. It was a relaxing, educational and thoroughly enjoyable fishing excursion that I would recommend to anyone. Additionally, as someone who is new to fly fishing, I appreciated how Troy spent time to teach me the techniques and helped me improve throughout the day. I am now a fly fisherman for life.

After rafting with The River Company, they kindly lent us a ducky (a blow-up kayak) for a few days so we could let the kids paddle and fish on Stanley Lake. They took one rod out while the other paddled. They only caught sticks, but it was great practice for them and we loved watching them fish independently. They even ASKED to get up early to go fishing! How amazing is that?

Even this little guy got into the fishing spirit! He loves to do anything that his big brother and daddy are doing! Our time in Stanley was perfect for first-time campers like us. It felt so good to be in nature and reconnect with what really matters! We all need to do this more often!

What has been your favorite place to reconnect with nature? We’d love to know your favorite places to camp, boat, hike or fish! Visit our site to learn how to fish and plan your next fishing adventure.

JDR Productions says: I thank my friend Jeremy Wittich for letting me use his #soloskiff on occasion while my #BTMosquito was in the works. All of us skinny water fly anglers undoubtedly dream of the unicorn multi-passenger skiff that will run dry in the heaviest of chop, pole straight as an arrow into a 15mph cross wind (NO hull slap allowed), get up and run in sub-7” of water, pole in 3”, and let the good tunes play on the speakers when you’re a few beers deep on a day when you need to celebrate an epic outing on the run home. Such a skiff does not exist today. The Soloskiff fills a niche of the skinniest draft (2.5”) I’ve experienced on a watercraft that will motor you around safely within a 15mi diameter on any given day and pole into the most shallow water possible holding gamefish. You’re not going to stay dry in chop, but you’re going to feel like you rode a bull or wakeboarded on a lake with traffic. 😜 It has all the feels. Raw. Real. Badass. It’s one hell of a fun skiff to flyfish in areas where others will never get their multi-person technical poling skiffs. The downside is that you’re range is limited, you’re going to get wet, and you’re fishing solo…so you had better get your videography skills in tact or no-one will believe your big fish tales. It’s an impressive design, and it poles well despite some hull slap. No skiff is perfect and every builder has new ideas, good or bad. I’m in the process of introducing a 2-3” draft device to the Texas waters that will be used on our rare, sub 6knot days when water levels are silly low…just need to work out some kinks. It, like anything else, will have limitations and it will be a very specialized tool but I hope it will be a tool that satisfies certain conditions no other watercraft will. Until then, there’s days I miss my old #customgheenoe LT25 and it’s super skinny draft that no center console poling skiff can match. -but I’m also very happy with a dry ride and the silent hull and fine design of my #BTMosquito that shines when those elusive redfish ram their head into the boat before I see them in 6” of muddy bottom. #FirstWorldChallenges #SkiffEngineering #Innovate #UnicornSkiff #OneStepCloserToWorldPeace

The last week and a half has been a busy one for the fleet, they were separated into four different transits groups. Each group starting on a different day, they would leave the marina at around 1330 and one by one the were required to radio San Cristobal control station for authorisation to cross the main shipping canal. Once crossed the group either anchored on stayed stationary at “the flats” while they waited for the advisers to board their boats.

They then started to motor towards the first set of locks and would raft just before going into them. After an amazing experience inside the locks the skippers moored their boats onto huge mooring buoys in Gaton Lake, the highest point above sea level the boats were ever going to be moored. They spent the night there, many celebrating the crossing of the first set of locks, and excited to head to the second set the next day.

The fleet were nicely woken up early the next morning by unbelievable loud howling just on the shore of Gaton Lake, howling monkeys were there every morning greeting the World ARC fleet to an early morning. The advisers would be on the boats between 0700-0800 and would tell the fleet to head on towards the second set of locks as it was a five hour motor across the lake with unbelievable views and incredibly big ships passing by.

The second pair of locks were easier to go through as the boats were just easing their lines on their way down. Once the gates opened the fleet made their way in the Pacific ocean with the spectacular sight of passing under the Bridge of the Americas, a first time for many of the boats.

They made their was to La Playita marina where the night of the 4th of February a dinner took place at a Lebanese restaurant where the fleet was greeted by belly dancers while dinning. This was the last chance the fleet had to say well done to the ARC Panama fleet who was leaving us. Congratulations and good luck to the 4 ARC Panama yachts Kindred Spirit, Orion, Exocet Strike and Wiki.

The World ARC fleet is currently on the island of Contadora in Las Perlas enjoying the lovely beaches and stunning weather Panama I offering.
